Sustainable Energy Policy of the EU
The aspiration of the European Union (EU) to become climate neutral by 2050 at the latest requires enabling an energy transition with massive efficiency gains and significantly higher shares of energy from renewable sources.
Currently, the energy system contributes over 75% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the Union, surpassing any other highly emitting sector. While Europe has been tackling energy-related emissions for decades now, this agenda has been exponentially accelerating since the Paris Agreement.
A new socio-economic paradigm is taking shape, with Europe gradually designing an integrated energy system, much more electrified, flexible and digitalised. However, this new system will be subject to the realities and challenges brought by the intermittent nature of renewable energy, primarily associated with sources like wind and solar power, which depend on unpredictable weather conditions.
The transition also highlights the complexity of the EU’s integration framework, where the competency to legislate in energy affairs is shared between the Member States and the supranational institutions.

Who Is This Course For
This course has been designed for students who want to better understand the functioning of the European Union and how this supranational organisation is enabling the transformation towards sustainability of an entire sector. It is important to take into account the trials and errors that often accompany the actions of a supranational organisation like the EU, and to compare what similar actions could be taken in other regions beyond Europe.
For this, it is recommended that students have at least a basic understanding of the economics of an energy system and the EU’s policy-making process.
This course will be particularly useful for those who want to pursue a career in EU public affairs, international affairs, or academia, with a strong focus on the politics of energy transition.
