International Human Rights Law

· July 29, 2025

This course offers an introduction to international human rights law and the ways in which it is interpreted, enforced, and challenged across the globe. In a time of democratic backsliding, conflict, and rising inequality, international human rights norms provide a framework for justice, dignity, and accountability.

Combining foundational principles with contemporary case studies and thematic analysis, the course explores how human rights law addresses key areas such as liberty and security of person, freedom of expression and assembly, fair trial rights, economic and social rights, and the protection of vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Learners will also gain insight into how individuals and organizations use advocacy, litigation, and UN mechanisms to respond to violations and promote reform.

Instructor

Emily Patterson

International Human Rights

Emily Patterson is an international human rights lawyer with nearly two decades of experience supporting justice sector reform, accountability, and rights-based governance in transitional, post-conflict, and politically complex settings. Her work spans legal and policy advisory roles with international organizations, civil society, and investigative teams across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

Emily has advised courts, ministries, and civil society organizations on issues including judicial independence, access to justice, gender equality, and minority rights. She has led field-based trial monitoring missions, conducted legislative reviews, and developed reform strategies in Kosovo, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, and the Philippines, among others. Her legal work also includes drafting submissions to EU, US, and UK authorities on sanctions, corruption, and human rights abuses, with a focus on countering authoritarian practices and supporting rule of law institutions.

As Co-Executive Director of the State Capture Accountability Project, Emily builds partnerships with local and international actors to tackle corruption and kleptocracy through legal tools. She has extensive experience in training and mentoring lawyers, investigators, and judges, and has developed and delivered practical guidance and curricula on gender-sensitive justice, judicial integrity, and human rights monitoring.

Her work consistently bridges field experience with strategic policy engagementโ€”bringing legal precision, political judgment, and deep contextual understanding to complex justice and accountability challenges.
